Lunar Eclipse Images
January 9th, 2001

I was unable to observe the whole eclipse. These images are not intended as serious lunar photography. They are presented here as the result of an experiment to find out what was possible with a 3.3M pixel digital zoom camera.

The camera in question is an Olympus Camedia C-3000Z. This has a 3x optical zoom roughly equivalent to a 93mm lens on a 35mm SLR camera. A further 2.5x digital zoom (7.5x total) yields the equivalent of a 233mm lens.

For these snaps, the camera was hand-held (leaning on the roof a a car), with fully manual focus, aperture stop, shutter speed and sensitivity. The settings for each short are recorded below.

I have appended a couple of field shots to show just how tiny the images are (even at full zoom), and an "actual pixels" version of the 233mm shot.
